Visual Communication – Tree Allegory

Allegory

Photoshop, 2015

The elements in this piece work to give the impression that an outside force is weighing down the tree. The color of the branches are warmer and brighter towards the top of the image, while in turn the bottom has a dark, depressed feel. It’s value gradually degrades to a fairly dark shade of blue. There are angled lines in the background which also lead the eye downwards. A pattern of transparent squares exist as well, overlaying the tree to make it appear pressured.

A large portion of this project was in the framing, which I kept relatively empty to provide some much needed negative space against the busy image in the center. The shape of the tree itself is a squashed version of the photo-reference, another play on the idea that it is being weighed down.
