The indigenous people of Malaysia and Indonesia would not hunt orangutans because they thought that the animals were actually humans that ran into the forest in order to avoid work or entering slavery. Orangutans are the world’s largest tree-living animal, spending nearly their entire lives in the canopy. On average, orangutans have the longest time between births of any mammal on the planet at 8 years. This means a female orangutan will only give birth to 4 or 5 children in her lifetime. Orangutans will eat bark, leaves, insects, and flowers, but the majority of their diet consists of fruits.
