Figure and Motion – Bone Study

Charcoal on Watercolor Paper, 15″x30″, 2016

This bone study focuses on the pelvis, humerus, and spinal bones, arranged in a manner in which they are being strung together with tendons. I really wanted this composition to mix bones with a more fleshy material, and in the end I decided on an arrangement that reminds me of hanging mobiles. It was especially important to make sure that this piece was balanced,  so I was sure to spend plenty of time planning out where to place those connective tendons. As well, to ensure that textures were accurate, I researched plenty of organic materials so that my bones and tissues would be as convincing as possible.
